ACLU email: Sessions' replacement even more evil

I receive emails from the ACLU quite frequently. Here they make the astounding claim that the new attorney general suddenly has the power to fire Mueller. In actual fact, the attorney general has always had the power to hire and fire his staff.

In addition, the AG is part of the executive branch. Trump has the constitutional power to pick his own staff, regardless of the potential for it benefiting Trump in some way.

Hi Aclu Supporter –

Not even 24 hours after this week's election, President Trump forced Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign. Sessions was the worst attorney general in modern American history, but if he's out then the Russia investigation is in serious danger.

This is how: Sessions' replacement will take over the investigation currently led by special counsel Robert Mueller. That gives the new AG the power to fire Mueller or use other obstructive tactics – like cutting funding – to bring the investigation to a screeching halt. We can't let that happen.

Sign the petition demanding that senators only confirm an attorney general nominee if the nominee pledges not to interfere in the Mueller investigation.

Trump needs to understand that nobody is above the law – not even the president. A president should never dismiss a cabinet official to protect his personal interests or his cronies from the rule of law. That's why any new attorney general must uphold the independent, transparent investigation Mueller has been running.

Checks and balances are a founding principle of our democracy. And our democracy is what's at stake if Trump cherry-picks an attorney general who will do his bidding. There's one check that stands in the way of Trump doing that: The Senate alone has the power to confirm or reject his next AG nominee. That's why we need to make our voices heard loud and clear.

Add your name: Senators must only confirm an attorney general if the nominee pledges not to interfere in the special counsel investigation and to keep Mueller operating under the special counsel regulation.

If we act now, we have a chance to stop this egregious threat to the rule of law.

Thanks for keeping up the fight,

Chris Anders
Deputy Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office
