Transcript: When people hear us talk of casting the mighty from their thrones and raising the lowly... of filling the hungry with good things while sending the rich away empty...

Inevitably, some will say, "That sounds like socialism."

But we remind them... it is the Gospel of Luke.
-----------

This is a textbook example of the left's biblical illiteracy. Or perhaps, their diabolical desire to give biblical cover to their political aims. Either way, we shall not allow this false teaching to go unexamined.

Let's first review the context. After an encounter with the Angel Gabriel, who announced she would give birth to the Savior, Mary went to visit her relative Elizabeth. Elizabeth's husband Zechariah had also been visited by Gabriel with a message that Elizabeth would give birth to a miraculous baby. At the time of Mary's arrival Elizabeth was six months pregnant with John the Baptist.

When Mary arrived, Elizabeth's unborn baby physically reacted. It was here that Elizabeth made a prophetic proclamation about the coming Savior. Lk. 1:42-45:
In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!”
Elizabeth pronounces a blessing for Mary because she believed what God would do.

Now we have arrived at the quoted passage, where we will find that God has moved mightily among His people before. Mary declares them prophetically. Let's quote the entire passage. Lk. 1:46-55:
And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me — holy is his name.
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants for ever, even as he said to our fathers.”
Who is Mary speaking about? The Lord, God my savior.
  • His mercy extends to those who fear Him
  • He has done great things
  • He has brought down rulers
  • He has lifted up the humble
  • He has filled the hungry
  • He has sent the rich away empty
  • He has help Israel in His mercy to Abraham
  • All this has been spoken of before
So along comes the Left, who take God's job from Him and appropriate it for themselves to be implemented in the political realm. Their message is they are the ones to cast down the mighty from their thrones and raising the lowly... of filling the hungry with good things while sending the rich away empty...  They decide who gets cast down, they decide who is lowly and who is deserving of the beneficence of government. They decide who is rich and gets sent away.

Their god is themselves, implementing socialism in the name of Jesus.

But Mary tells us that God has sent Jesus to save us from sin and to cast down those who do not fear Him. He chooses those who will ascend to political power and those who will be humiliated. He deals with those with much and who do not do what is right in His eyes.

Mathew tell us:
Mt. 6:1-4 “Be careful not to do your `acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Those who do their merciful acts must do so without fanfare or recognition. The prideful leaders of the government back in those days get their praise from their friends, but that is all they get. They have received their reward in full. The same is true today.

In conclusion, the installation of socialism is substituted for the act of salvation from sin. This is an egregious manifestation of the arrogance of socialism.
