The new age and Christianity - FB conversation

Kevin: have you read anything from richard rohr?

Me: Not that I know of.

Kevin: can you do this test for me? https://www.truity.com/test/enneagram-personality-test

Me: Naw, I don't think so.

Kevin: ok

Me: The more I read the more I am turned off by it. "George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff, who brought the Enneagram to Europe in the 1920s, claimed it originated about 2500 years ago in a Babylonian wisdom school. He taught that each person is born with a 'planetary body type' with certain physical and psychological traits. He believed that a person’s physical and psychological characteristics are related to a dominant endocrine gland and to planetary influences on that gland. This implicates the Enneagram with Babylonian astrology, since those characteristics would be signified by a point on the Enneagram."

Kevin: ah tyvm

Me: You're welcome. Tell me how this came to your attention.

Kevin: https://www.amazon.com/Enneagram-Christian-Perspective-Richard-Rohr-ebook/dp/B07H9F6CVZ/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=enneagram+a+christian+perspective&qid=1590164985&s=digital-text&sr=1-3

Me: Ah. He's a Catholic mystic.

Kevin: #1 selling book in christian prayer

Me: Haven't studied the issue enough, but it sounds like it's just another infiltration of new age and eastern mysticism into the Church.

Kevin: if you were going to counterfeit money would you do dollar bills or 100 dollar bills?

Me: Good point.

Kevin: https://www.amazon.com/New-Age-Masquerade-Jonathan-Welton/dp/0615966721

by being afraid of the counterfeit calling it the devil have many christians left the dollar bill out of their wallet?

Me: Making money from the counterfeit?

Kevin:: i just meant that they dont have the real in their belief system because they are afraid of the counterfeits saying the chrisitan things that look new age things of the holy spirit

Me: The Church has its established doctrines, and any variation from those doctrines are heresy. Resistance is based on the perception of heresy. Sometimes that is a valuable thing, sometimes it obscures the actual truth.

Doctrines can be mistaken or flawed. Many of them come out of cultural contexts of understanding as opposed to the Bible.

The problem is interpreting the Bible through doctrines, as opposed to letting the Bible reveal doctrine. Once a doctrine is established, everything else gets interpreted through doctrine.

Interestingly, doctrines like TULIP or Darbysim were not known in the Church, but people accepted them, throwing out hundreds of years of previous understanding.

That what makes recovery of true teaching difficult, it's the way doctrinal perspectives get entrenched. For some reason, true doctrine is easily abandoned for falsehood, just because pastors teach it and theologians advocate for it. I deal with a lot of these on my blog: https://mountainmantrails.blogspot.com/search/label/Doctrine%20rethink

Kevin: right as i learn more context , culture, and greek im finding myself drawn to new age like language but i can explain them with the bible. but man there are not alot of safe places to talk about these things.

there are many man made doctrines that prevent the church from maturing and connecting with the father.

I love your blog today.. the law and prophets served a purpose but not our foundation as new covenant new reality of jesus. yea baby!! I was say that there was a time in transition were both covenants existed... Hebrews By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.. There was a 40 year transition period from Jesus ministry death and the destruction of the temple in 70ad.

hebrews 8:13

so many shadows in moses life that we can see the real in jesus.

Me: My preference would be to not look at the new age and see if it's in the Bible, but rather to look at the Bible to evaluate the new age. The only virtue of new age language and concepts I would accept is for the purpose of conveying truth to new agers. My friend and spiritual father Rob goes to Burning Man every year with this view. New agers have accepted a concept of spirituality which is an adulterated shadow of the heavenly reality. They don't come to the table with something to offer, they come with an unrealized need.

My friend ministers the Gospel in their language. Example: Often the idea of spirit guides will come up as they minister. They often get asked about their spirit guide, and my friend tells them his spirit guide is the "Master Spirit of Light." Unadulterated truth combined with language that they can understand.

Kevin: right and he doesnt use the name of jesus he uses father. or should I say at what point does he bring jesus into the picture or does he just reconcile them to the father

Me: Groundwork needs to be laid in most of these people, who are largely fatherless. The love of the Father is front and center at first, but of course the Father implies a Son. The Son is part once Father is established.

Kevin: some people get very offended by saying Father is upfront and at first and needs to be established before you bring the son in the picture especially krista who is good friends with Rob.
