Ed Farrell responds to my column

I'll put together a response later.

In response to Rich Sherlock’s latest (Nov. 2) gripe; I am tired of all of the people who insist on getting a free ride on the backs of everyone else.

Rich, you drive to your office condo on city streets. It takes money to maintain those streets. The city, as far as I know, does not receive any money from vehicle taxes. How is it supposed to maintain those streets? Or are those streets magical and never in need of maintenance?

The issue of tree taxes where there are no trees I’ll leave up to you. You vote for the city officials; I don’t.

Classifying impact fees as “feel good noise” really sets me off! Every additional person living in this community creates an additional demand on basic infrastructure: potable water, sewer, police and fire protection. This infrastructure does not appear by magic. Current residents are already paying for the maintenance of the existing infrastructure. Why should they also pay for the new infrastructure required for the additional population?

You are entitled to your opinion that developers add beauty to the local scene. Recognize that that opinion is not universal, and that the idea that the total population should pay to put money in the pockets of the developers might be objectionable to some of your fellow citizens, as well as their duly elected representatives.

Do you take the position that no government is necessary? If not, I would be interested in just where you would draw the line. What should we have in the way of government and how should we pay for it? That ought to be fodder for at least a couple of columns and might even be interesting to most of the rest of us.

Ed Farrell
